I am a local violin teacher in RI. I brought one of my students, who was looking for a high quality student instrument, to Mr. Lyons shop. Michael was very helpful and knowledgable in the instruments he had to offer. My student tried 9 instruments over three weeks and she was not rushed to make her choice. I was able to see and try every violin in the shop and every instrument was professionally set up and the bridge work he does is the best I have seen so far. Very nice restoration on all the older instruments and all new fittings and strings makes for an excellent and confident purchase. All the details are done expertly and his attention to an instrument is the same if it is a $500 dollar instrument, or a $5000 dollar instrument. The new violins he offers are also given this treatment and are set up for optimal sound and playability. I am particularly pleased he takes the time to hand select the newer instruments he sells. You just cant go wrong with Mr. Lyons when making such an important purchase for yourself ... Show full review

Just a brief introduction... I am a student at Berklee College of Music in Boston... and I've been playing the violin for about 10 years. I am concentrating on jazz guitar right now, but I decided to get back on the violin. I went to many shops to look for a violin... some in Rhode Island and some in Boston. I even went to some shops in New Jersey area... and it was just so tough to find the right violin for the right price. It would always be the problem of... "bad violins" for "high price" and "decent violins" for "seriously high price." I knew buying a violin would be something serious... but I didn't know much and I ended up at my last stop, Michael Lyons Violins... First of all, it's in Foster, Rhode Island - a great drive, awesome and nature-like... and the studio, (he built it, by the way) is awesome... beautifully made, very nice. I got there, and Michael was just such a nice man - he didn't rush me or anything... I tried couple of violins... the first one he handed me was pretty nice actually, so I asked... he said ... "Christmas Fiddle" What a wonderful surprise when my wife and I brought my fathers old violin to Mike to see if there was any hope of it being restored. It was in such bad shape we saw he was hesitant, but I really felt it was something I always wanted to do so I gave him the O.K. As Mike worked on it he said it started to come alive as if it had a spirit. Sure enough Mike called it the "Christmas Fiddle", with great craftsmanship he made it playable and brought us to tears when he played "I'll Be Home For Christmas". He said the violin was over 100 years old but playes like a new model. The whole experience with Mike was a joy we will always remember.

violin repair extraordinaire Our family has had Mike Lyons doing our violin repair for several years, and wouldn't go anywhere else. He's got a lot of pride in his work, and it shows: expert repairs, speedily done. And he's a great guy to boot. What more could you want? We highly recommend him.

Violin Set-Up I broke the bridge on my old Lion Head fiddle. There were a few cracks in the top and the sound post and nut needed work. I found Mike on the web and took it in. He fixed the cracks and did the best set-up I've had done on my fiddle. I can't believe the difference in sound, playability and looks. It is a real fiddle again. I told him I'd recommend his services to anyone and I gladly will. He is the man to go to in Northwest RI or North East Connecticut for anything to do with violins or fiddles.
