Falafel introduction | I was recently in Paris and we read about this place in a guidebook. We did not give it much thought but when we walked past and recognized the name our grumbling stomachs led the way. This was the first time I've ever had falafels. My home city has tonnes of falafel places but I just never thought to try them. Las du Fallafel has changed that. I enjoyed tasty falafels for a reasonable price and came away with a new favourite food. I recommend this place to anyone. Great for vegetarians too. The take out window had a long lineup at lunchtime though it seemed to move quickly. We ate inside, which probably saved us from staining our shirts with the yummy huge servings. It was reasonably priced to boot. I love the Marais area and now have a fav restaurant there too. Go enjoy! |

L'As du Fallafel is one of the few places where Parisians chow down on the street. Beginning with a fork, dig into warm pita bread stuffed with marinated crunchy cabbage, silky eggplant, sesame hoummous, and boules of chick-pea paste, crisp-fried falafel. Spice it up with a dab of searingly-hot sauce piquante.
L'As du Fallafel: 34, rue de Rosiers, in the Marais. Open every day, except closed friday beginning at sundown, reopening for lunch sunday.
From Fodor's:
Today I was dreading L'As du Falafel in the Marais, watching everyone enjoy their falafel at the "best falafel known to womankind" (lol). I decided to be brave and see what they could make me that was GF. The place is mobbed and you stand at a counter and get rushed through the line so I can' believe I gave it a whirl. SUCCESS. After handing the guy behind the counter my GF card (and watching as he grew increasingly more horrified by the things I cannot eat), I got a delicious bowl of shawarma, eggplant and some sort of crispy shredded veggies. They were super nice about it and I think they learned a little about gluten at the same time. I wish I could post photos here because we got a very funny photo of me in front of the falafel place with my plastic tupperware filled with shwarma AND my GF card. So funny. Anyway, if you are with people who are dying to get the falafel, there is a GF option out there. As for the devine L'as de Falafel--their crunchy veggies were thin slices of cucumber, purple cabbage, carrots and beets, (as well as big chunks of creamy aubergine) and you select what you want/don't want to have with the tahini sauce. We stayed just steps away from the stand and they were kind indeed.

Truly transcendent falafel
For a truly transcendent sandwich, do not miss L'As du Fallafel. Located in the Jewish Quarter (Marais) at 34 Rue de Rosiers, the crowded little shop creates pitas stuffed impossibly full with spicy falafel, rich hummus, red cabbage slaw, buttery chunks of lightly fried eggplant and, upon request, a splash of screaming red chile sauce (picante).
Like Seinfeld's infamous soup spot, you need to know the system before you go: enter the door and file right to place your order, then pay at the register. Hold on to your receipt, loop around to the left and present your ticket to get your order filled. A loaded vegetarian special runs 25F ($4.40), and for a few dollars extra, you can get a can of ice cold beer, an excellent accompaniment.
There are some cramped cafeteria tables inside -- where the service is remarkably decorous considering the din, and the walls are plastered with photos of famous patron Lenny Kravitz -- but most likely you'll end up loitering on the narrow street out front with other diners, singlemindedly devouring your food. If you're extremely coordinated, you can stroll and eat -- but you risk wearing your falafel.
Don't go on Saturday -- it's closed, as are most businesses in the quarter. And while other neighborhood joints serve authentic falafel, it falls flat in comparison.

New York Times Review
L'As du Fallafel
34 rue des Rosiers, Paris, 75004
The falafel sandwich here contains the requisite super-crisp, garlicky chickpea fritters, with creamy hummus, lightly pickled red cabbage (something between slaw and kraut), salted cucumbers, fried eggplant and just-hot-enough harissa. This is all piled into a pita in such quantities that eating it is an adventure in napkin management. You can make for a slightly neater experience by eating in, but aside from the cramped tables and the brusque though not unfriendly service, there is something about this sandwich that begs for it to be eaten outdoors.
You could pretend to be a European teenager and get fries on top, but then you would definitely need extra hummus and harissa, and the mess is further compounded. You might also think about a shwarma — a similar sandwich with lamb (6 euros) — but this is your chance to go meat-free and love it, so why not?
One thing you should know: You have to order from and pay the cashier on the right (a falafel is 4 euros, about $5.35 at $1.34 to the euro) before offering your receipt to the guys on the left, who produce your sandwich — a process that is fun to witness.
