Very disappointing!
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 By David - Nov 1, 2009
My wife and I went to Rusan's for the first time because we love sushi and had heard from multiple people they liked Rusan's and that it was “fun.” First the good: - Rusan's has a young crowd, it is very energetic and actually a good bit of fun atmosphere wise if you don't mind the chaos. - We enjoyed the crowd at the sushi bar, chatting with our fellow sushi aficionados - The Hamachi was not too bad; the fish was firm, had a nice color and tasted fresh, although the chef prepping it cut it into irregular pieces. Unfortunately, that is all the good we can say about Rusan's. Having had sushi all over the US and the world, I guess my wife and I are spoiled by how good sushi CAN be, even at places that are NOT high dollar or snobby. We were not expecting MF Buckhead quality, but OMG! Sadly, Rusan's disappointed on almost every dish. It was the second worst sushi I have had in the Atlanta area, and the service was inadequate and surly, even though we were there at 6:00 – 7:00 PM on a Saturday, and the place had plenty of open tables and sushi bar seats. - The rice…bedrock of any sushi, was not cooked enough making it way too firm for proper sushi rice. Later dishes were a little better, so somebody didn't do a good job with the rice early on. - We had tuna Tataki, which was over seasoned and had a spicy sauce that was incredibly overpowering for the fish. It was almost as if they took a chain restaurant blackened tuna (Maguro) and put it on a plate over chopped slaw and lettuce. Because the tuna was also over seared, it was firm on the outside, and the fish had to be thoroughly chewed; a sure sign of inferior quality fish, which should otherwise be soft, delicate and almost melt in the mouth at better places. - The Toro was filled with tendon strips, not very oily, and because it was cut wrong against the grain of the fish, all of the pieces “flaked” into multiple diagonal pieces on every portion of nigiri, each split segment with a thin tendon. Again, very poor fish quality and cutting. - We tried some Hotategai (scallops) gungka style, which arrived slathered with teriyaki sauce. The scallops smelled AND tasted fishy, and were so bad we could not eat them. - The worst dish of all was the tempura vegetables. Seeing some people at the bar with tempura vegetable orders that looked tasty, we decided to try them, but what we got when ordering “mixed vegetable tempura” arrived looking like a greasy plate of “Blooming Onion” with a few strips of carrot and what tasted like asparagus. When we complained about it and asked why we did not get the tempura like what our neighbors had, the young female server told us we did not order “vegetable tempura” (huh?) but the mixed vegetable tempura, and “that is how it is made.” I guess we are just uneducated according to her because in a hundred sushi restaurants across the US and parts of Asia, I have never seen “vegetable tempura” come out looking like somebody took a potato peeler and had at a pile of onions and carrots over a frying vat. We told her we wanted a plate of tempura style vegetables individually battered (zucchini, sweet potato, beans, etc.) and she said that we “should have ordered” separate orders of tempura zucchini, tempura sweet potato, etc. We were not amused. The “tempura” was what you would get if KFC started to offer Japanese food. Did the server offer to take it off the bill? Nope, she just walked away with us complaining, not that her earlier bouts of slow service, continually taking away our menus, and bringing us the wrong drink were a good sign either. We should have gone to speak to the management, but frankly, we were so annoyed at the consistently lousy quality, we figured we'd have had to fight to get half of the items taken off, so still hungry, we left. If you want to party, drink and listen to loud music and voices, this place is just the thing. If you are expecting good to great sushi, find another restaurant. We will never go to this place again and you should not either. « Hide

Still My Favorite...After All These Years!!!
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 By Kellyn - Sep 12, 2009
I LOVE RuSan's! It's not only their friendly atmosphere, but the variety of Sushi and Japanese foods are incredible. I really enjoy eating their more traditional foods like: Ume (pickled plum), Pink Pearls (pickled garlic) and Jellyfish salad. They're so affordable and dependable. I have been eating their since I was 10 years old. I'll NEVER tire of them!!!!

It's okay California-style sushi. Don't go here if you're looking for the real thing. Also, a lot of their rolls are fried and kind of greasy. However, the price for lunch can't be beat. ...
