As waves of immigrants flooded into Chicago during the late 1800's, William Reebie realized people needed help moving and storing their possesions. He built the city's first moving van out of junk parts. By the 1920's, William and his brother commissioned architect George Kingsley and sculptor Fritz Albert to build a headquarters and storage location for their business at 2325-33 N.Clark Street. John had just returned from a trip to Egypt and then later in 1922 the country was enthralled with the discovery of King Tut's tomb. John persuaded his more business-minded brother to agree to an Egyptian Revival architecture theme. The brothers are represented by the twin statues of Pharaoh Ramses II at the main entrance. The terra cotta ("baked earth" in Latin) used on the exterior was crafted Fritz Albert. The company is still in business and still operates from this site.
