Open photo page I've seen this tower many times, mostly in movies such as "Close Encounters with a Third Kind", where it served as the base for an alien visit to Earth. To see it in person is a totally different matter. It is colossal, sticking some 800 feet up out of the surrounding prairie landscape. You can see the huge geometric patterns in the phonolite porphyry rock. The whole thing is an igneous intrusion thrust up through the sedimentary rock which is typical of the Black Hills area, forming a lacolith which is better able to stand the wear and tear of erosion. It is truly an alien feature in this area, no wonder it has attracted so much attention. A Native American sacred site, it also was the US's first National Monument, set down by President Theodore Roosevelt. Today it is also a beacon for rock climbers, who love the tall columns.
