I was in Washington, DC (for the first time in my life) for two nights this past February. Some friends and I went out one night, and were pointed to The Raven as a good bar to check out. I ordered a beer, paid with a $20 bill (they only take cash, so I had just gone to an ATM), and the girl working the bar brought back my change. As I turned to go rejoin my friends, she grabbed my arm and told me that her tip was still in the change she had brought me. Never in my life have I come across anyone who has explicitly requested a tip, much less GRABBED me and demanded it. I left her a dollar on the bar and went back to my friends, a bit angry that I had actually tipped such a rude person, but I didn't argue with her or say anything about it. After finishing my beer, I went back to the bar and stood in front of her for a solid five minutes while she refused to look at me. I finally went ahead and asked for another beer, and she just shook her head. I asked again, ... More »

I finally went ahead and asked for another beer, and she just shook her head. I asked again, and she said that she had the right to deny service, and she refused to serve me again. There was a guy working the bar with her, and I asked him. Also refusing to even look at me, he just shook his head. I only had one beer that night, so it is not as if I was being cut off for having too much or for being drunk and unruly. I have never felt more alienated or discriminated against in my life, and I was never even given an explanation. « Hide

Anti-Semitic place!...
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 By Gal - Mar 10, 2009
I sat on the bar with my friend, when a crazy old Pakistani person approached me. He could hear I have a foreign accent, so he asked me where did I grow up. When I told him I grew up in Israel, he started insulting me saying the Jews cause all the problems of the world. He called me mutherfucker and started pushing me brutally. This crazy man didn't even let me express my views. I told him "If you want to sit next to me, have a beer and talk about the Israeli Palestinian conflict like civilized people, then I'm willing to talk with you. Otherwise, I don't want to hear you. He kept on pushing me, and I knew that I have to do something, I tried to call the bartender who was too busy, so I went to the bouncer who took me out of the place and calmed me down. I wanted to get back into the bar, the owner was at the door. I told him about the indecent and asked him to kick the person out of there. He said the the person is a REGULAR COSTUMER, and he can't do it. I ... More »

In respond the OWNER OF THE PLACE TOLD ME I CAN'T GET IN!!! This was one of the most insulting experiences I've ever been through. Just to make things clear. I was discriminated for being Israeli and Jewish. I'ma democratic, left winger, and I have quite a few Muslim friends. These people don't know anything about me, nor let me express my views, yet they brutally discriminated me. I told this story to a friend of mine who told me he also had a bad experience there when some other crazy person insulted his friend for being African-American. (Very strange since the owner is African-American). Yes the drinks are cheap, but the place is unpredictable. BEWARE « Hide

Best Dive in DC
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 By California - Aug 7, 2009
Once upon a time, a young Californiano lived in DC and was utterly dismayed at the popped collars and business card trading culture. The Raven was the only place in Northwest where the first question asked upon me introducing myself to someone was not where or who I worked for. I discovered that DC locals are much more friendly than the typical transient and bureaucrat which all DC bars and restaurants tend to cater to. But the Raven is the only place where I could meet these locals. DC is still a little too much for me because of its "old boys" culture, but when I do go back to DC, this is the place where I feel at home. But I do have to warn you. This place isn't for everyone. It is a real dive. They may have repainted a couple years ago, but don't let that fool you. It is definitely a place where you will encounter all sorts of people--from the hipster to the punk, to the drunkard, to the homeless. It is real and it ... More »

In keeping with the feel of a dive, it's beer selection is shit and the bathrooms are disgusting. I love it! « Hide

... "Discovered" by the college kids a few years ago, the Raven has been left in peace now that they've taken their weekend slumming down the block to Marx. Still a useful place to pull yourself together after a long day. The rumors of its remodel are greatly exaggerated: apart from a TV over the jukebox, the remodel consists entirely of replacing ripped seat-cushions and replacing a few dim ...
