| After years of living in Berkeley, I finally found a place that delivers really good Chinese food. Delivery is fairly fast and the owner often brings it himself. Everything is packed carefully (with love!) and we've never had leaky containers or spills, and that includes soups and dishes with a lot of sauce. Tonight we're ordering soup, three entrees and rice, Total about $40 incl. tax and delivery. Not too bad for sitting on the couch! I tend to like the spicy dishes, and while I usually love Schezuan eggplant, the eggplant here tends to be a little on the mushy side. I am trying the stuffed eggplant tonight. We always like the sauteed green beans - they are fresh and tasty, never soft or overcooked. Pot stickers are pretty good - personally, I like a little more ginger in mine, but they make us happy enough sitting at home in the LR watching a movie! Sometimes my daughter -- bless her heart -- will get them first and eat them ALL. All the food is fresh and nicely prepared, though. Best thing about ordering from Mandarin Garden? The owners, of course. We almost always find some special treats in our order: sauteed pea sprouts (love them!), that sweet glazed apple dessert, or who knows what. The first time this happened we were so surprised and found it so touching and kind that we decided we'd stick with Mandarin Garden forever. We haven't regretted it. I lived in SF for many years, and NY, and I can't say this is THE best Chinese food I've ever had, but certainly the best delivery in Berkeley. Someday we'll even eat at the restaurant! « Hide |

| Our organization was looking for a banquet venue nearer to downtown Berkeley and less pricey than the popular waterfront places. The Mandarin Garden was great. Our group of 50 fit comfortably into the nicely-appointed banquet room, and after an expectant wait, Mr. Weng's staff started piling on the dishes. The soup was clear, fresh, and tasty. The vegetarian, fish, chicken and beef dishes all got top reviews from our table. Eating Chinese style, passing the big plates around on the lazy Susan, family style, was great for table sociability and made the conversation flow easily. Before it was over we were stuffed and had leftovers to take home. And the price -- extremely reasonable, a fraction of what we would have been in for at the high-price joints. Thank you, Mr. Weng. We'll be back. « Hide |
