| Nielsons has been around since the late 60s, I think. The place was originally tucked away in what was Highland Village. It has always been mostly takeout. I have been to parties (and funerals) in Houston, where the whole table was loaded with Neilsons deli trays and salads. The meats, fruit salad, potato salad & sandwhich, are not the spicy Kosher deli style, but more bland. (The family owners are Danish). To me, the food is unique. Alfreds was more a Kosher style deli in Houston, in the Village, long ago. Neilsons moved out to Lantern Lane shopping area near Memorial & Gessner where my parents retired. I had moved away, so a visit to see them, included a trip to Neilsons. We drug sacks of our favorites to ranches, boats & other cities for get-togethers. I come back to Houston rarely, but now and then, stop on Richmond and have Nielsons, take some to friends, family, or home to Austin. It might be just acquired taste or old timey for some. To me it is the memory of good and bad times, things not changing, great quality, a favorite tradition. « Hide |
