How can the Italian Consulate in NY be so bad? I don't understand how these people can be employed. They never pick up the phone and when they do, they are rude, abnoxious and don't know what they are talking about. We are dealing with ignorant idiots here. How can this office stay "open". « Hide

The visa appointment at Consulate General of Italy, New York went pretty smoothly for me and my husband. The first few things that the security officer asked to present on entering were Application Form, Print of Confirmation of Appointment and Passport. The Visa Officer also asked for Application form (which was to be filled, signed and have photograph (35mmx45mm) attached beforehand). Then, she asked for what kind of Visa are you applying for. We applied for tourist visa. We were asked to present the following documents - 1. Copy of Passport (all pages) 2. Print of airline tickets (return trip) - make sure tickets contain Confirmation Number or e-ticket numbers printed clearly along with each traveler's name 3. Hotel confirmation letter (either received by Mail or Fax from Italy) - Ensure the confirmation number is mentioned on the hotel letter, also the name of the travelers. The copy of Expedia itinerary or any other such sites are not acceptable. 4. Letter issued by the employer (that contains Employment Start Date, Job Title, Annual Salary and Vacation period (that is, vacation/leave that has been approved). 5. State ID/Driving Licence (notarized copy) 6. Copy of recent Pay stubs (minimum 3) 7. Bank statements (3 recent ones) - Original as well as copy 8. Health/medical Insurance letter - Ask your insurance company to provide you a letter that has exact same words as mentioned on Consulate's website (ofcourse, incase your medical insurance actually covers those things, else you will have to buy some insurance recommended on consulate's website before you go for the visa). The Visa officer looks for Name, Covered Amount (Minimum 30000 Euros), Overseas Coverage, Medical Insurance ID number and Validity of insurance stated in the letter. We had all documents that were asked for and that too in 2 sets - original and copies, so it was golden! Thanks to the reviews that we read before going for it. I believe they look for Confirmation Numbers or IDs and name of the travelers in the documents. If they find everything in place, getting through the visa process will be a breeze. We paid around 78 dollars per head as the visa fee (and they demand exact change if you pay by cash and if you pay by credit card, they charge few extra bucks on it). It was mentioned in our appointment confirmation email that you can choose to have your passport returned by mail, self-addressed, pre-paid envelope - FedEx, DHL or UPS - for return postage. But there they refused to accept FedEx envelope and asked us to come and collect the passports after 12 days. Hope this helps! « Hide

These people are rude, insensitive, out of touch with reality and have the poorest work ethics possible. Don't expect to come out of this ghetto consulate happy. I want to know if there is one soul that got the Italian visa in their first try. Some tips that might help ease the pain (although I am convinced, they will find out some other mistake in your application): - Book your visa appointment at least couple months in advance or you will get visa appointment date after your flight date. Booking appointment costs money. - They don't like any medical insurance that makes you pay first and the insurance company reimburses later. They will direct you to buy insurance from one of the insurance companies mentioned on their website. Most likely insurance from your office will not work. You can buy the insurance from their providers and cancel it after you get the visa and stick with your work insurance. - They need confirmation from hotel by mail. Don't show them priceline or hotels.com confirmation. It will be duly rejected. - Invitation letter needs to be in original (ie by mail). They don't accept fax. Also, invitation letter needs to be filled by one person. Don't fill up your part and let the host fill his part. Its not Italian consulate. It's "Shitalian consulate". « Hide
