To apply the mind to learning or the understanding of a subject, especially by reading;

to investigate or examine, for example, a problem, as by observation, research, etc.;

to look at minutely – scrutinize – give much careful or critical thought to (a claim, problem, etc.);

to take an educational course in a subject;

more generally, to meditate or contemplate – to reflect on something.

 

Also, the process of learning or acquisition of knowledge about a subject;

an investigation of a problem or claim(s), especially through a discrete series or array of systematic observations and/or procedures or tests, as in an empirical or scientific study – a piece of (scientific) research.
