Editing Places

Read our community guidelines for using this feature or the FAQ.

Community edits allow you to change the information you see on Google Maps to make it more accurate for everyone. Here are some things you can do:

  • Remove a business on Google Maps that's closed down.
  • Add a community landmark or point of interest that you think your neighbors would want to find.
  • Move the placemark for your home address if its been positioned a little off (just click the marker, then Edit > Move marker to get started).
  • Edit details for a local business that you notice are incorrect.
  • Flag a place as inappropriate if you think we should check it out (how can I tell what's inappropriate?)

Viewing Community Edits

If the community has edited a place, you can view the history of these edits. To do this:

  1. After you search for a place, click the the appropriate marker. The info window appears.
  2. Click Edit > View history to display community edits of this place.

Community edits appear in Google Maps search results. You adjust marker locations that others can view and search. However, you can also highlight locations, areas and routes, and share them with others by creating a custom map with My Maps. Points that you create on your custom map won't appear in Google Maps search results, and you'll be able to send a direct link to only the people you wish to share it with.

To access this feature, click the My Maps tab in Google Maps.
