Jardines de San Juan: Auf der Karte, im Herzen
The Challenge
For generations, the vibrant community of Jardines de San Juan existed on the periphery of Mexico City without a formal street naming or numbering system. This geographic isolation meant residents were effectively invisible, unable to receive official mail or provide a verifiable address for essential urban services. The stakes of this exclusion were highest during emergencies; notably, when forest fires threatened the area, responders were unable to locate the neighborhood, leaving families to defend their homes alone. Ultimately, living without a digital identity meant inhabiting a "no-man's land" where the lack of a simple address barred thousands from the basic safety and connectivity enjoyed by the rest of the city.
The Solution & Implementation
Partnership: Google in collaboration with local community leaders.
Auswirkungen: Von unsichtbar zu integriert
The Process:
-
Community Mapping: Field teams mapped the sprawling neighborhood, identifying thousands of individual homes and businesses that had never appeared on a digital map.
-
Assigning Identity: Plus Codes were generated for every 3x3 meter area, giving each front door a unique, verifiable alphanumeric string.
-
Civic Integration: Residents were taught how to use these codes to register for social programs, ensuring the community was finally recognized by municipal and state authorities.
The Impact
-
Safety & Emergency: For the first time, emergency services can pinpoint exact locations, replacing vulnerability with a tangible safety net.
-
Economic Empowerment: Local businesses now have direct access to suppliers and customers, while residents can finally participate in the e-commerce economy.
-
Dignity and Belonging: Beyond the technical benefits, the project has fostered a deep sense of inclusion. Residents no longer live in a "no-man's land"—they have a specific, identifiable place in the world.
